They say 'small gestures, such as showing compassion'! Since when has showing compassion been a small thing?

Strong relationships are important at any age, but this study points to one significant reason why they are important for older people. It also suggests that social groups aimed at widowed people may be helpful in more basic ways than we thought. Perhaps organising a group who get together for a coffee and chat at local cafes is actually reducing dementia in the city!

Interesting and perhaps encouraging survey of British men. If you put what these guys want to be together with the divorce figures it suggests that efforts to support and encourage married people are on the right track.

Plain stupid cultural change! Weddings have been slowly but steadily celebritised. The current expectations of something like a British Royal Wedding on a somewhat smaller scale is plain daft! All a wedding needs is a willing couple, families and some friends, a celebrant and ideally a feast. The families and friends can easily provide a pot luck feast if money is short, celebrants ought not to be too expensive, and the rest can be almost free.

What are your best ideas for cutting the cost of weddings?

What do you know about the 'millennial success sequence' and marriage?

It's not often we get to post about academic political economy here, but this podcast has lots of interesting information.

I hope 5 years is not a "significant" gap, we've only been married 42 years and I'd hate to think "dissatisfaction" was going to set in at some stage.

Seriously, I can really see how big gaps could matter, but suspect that as with many other things good communication helps.

Have you seen this impassioned plea for marriage by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in response to the UK Children's Commissioner's Report? The statistics are from England, but how different would the picture here be? And would it be better or worse?

A really important question for many couples.

How well do you think this article deals with the issues?
